Why the product is sourced, not simply ordered
Most incense beads are rolled by hand in small partner workshops, often family-run ateliers inside or near the incense and bead clusters of Fujian and Guangdong. Powder milling can be mechanized; shaping, piercing, drying and aging cannot be pushed far beyond manual work. That has two consequences for a buyer. First, there is no catalogue of identical stock to pick from: every workshop has its own formulas, hand and drying habits. Second, quality depends on the match between a brief and a workshop, which is why a shortlist matters more than a price list.
Ouvare works as a sourcing desk. It coordinates partner workshops, bead rollers and packaging suppliers, shortlists by project, arranges sample rounds and inspection, and organizes shipping. It is not a single workshop, and the sourcing logic below applies whether you use the desk or run the search yourself.
Where the craft sits
Three regions matter most, and each contributes something different. Figures below are as reported by the named sources and are not verified by the desk. Details are on the industry clusters page and in China's incense clusters.
| Region | What it contributes | Reported by |
|---|---|---|
| Yongchun, Fujian | Stick incense know-how, nanmu binder supply, blending skills | People's Daily Overseas Edition, 2024 |
| Xianyou Bangtou, Fujian | Bead stringing, wooden bead and bracelet trade, findings | Sina Finance, 2019 |
| Dianbai, Guangdong | Agarwood raw material and processing | Local government and press reports, 2024 |
Partner workshops sit in or near these clusters and in intangible-heritage practitioners' studios elsewhere. The desk does not name them publicly; it names them to the buyer after a shortlist is agreed.
What a complete brief contains
A workshop cannot quote a bead from the words incense bracelet. A brief that earns a useful quote contains the following.
- The line: sandalwood, agarwood, goose pear, herbal blend, or a custom formula.
- Bead size, count and hole size, plus cord type and findings.
- Scent direction and a reference, such as a sample you already own.
- Quantity per design and the number of designs.
- Branding: engraving, tablet relief, tags, boxes.
- Target market and the documents that market needs.
- Target delivery date and shipping route.
Everything on that list changes the price or the lead time, so leaving items blank usually means a second round of questions rather than a faster quote.
How a shortlist is built
A sourcing desk shortlists on fit, not on size. The questions it asks of each partner workshop are practical: does the workshop already roll the bead size and material line in the brief, how does it dry and store beads, can it show records for the powders it buys, and does it have a packing routine suited to export? Two or three workshops are then asked for a sample against the same brief, so the buyer compares like with like. Where a project spans several formats, such as bracelets, tablets and gift boxes, the desk may combine a bead workshop with a separate packaging supplier and coordinate the handover between them. The buyer deals with one point of contact while the work is spread across the cluster, which is the real value of the model for a first import.
Shortlisting also protects against a common risk, which is a workshop that is excellent at one line and merely adequate at another. A sandalwood specialist may not handle agarwood paperwork well; a stringing workshop may not understand drying. Matching the line to the workshop avoids that.
Reference minimums and timelines
These are typical reference ranges used in the trade and are confirmed in writing for each program; they are not a price list. More on the MOQ and lead time page.
| Item | Typical reference range |
|---|---|
| Stock bracelet MOQ | 50-200 pieces per design |
| Private label (engraving, boxes) | About 300-1,000 pieces per design |
| Custom formula | About 500 pieces, with sample rounds |
| Loose beads | 1-5 kg per bead size |
| Stock sample | 5-10 working days |
| Custom sample | 15-25 days, including drying and aging |
| Production | 15-25 working days stock; 25-40 days standard batch; 40-60 days custom formula |
Samples, audits and inspection
The sample is the specification. The approved sample is the document against which the lot is checked, so ask the workshop to retain a sealed reference strand and record bead diameter range, strand weight and hole size on a sample sheet. For larger programs, a workshop visit or a remote audit shortens trust-building; the checklist is in the workshop audit notes and on the factory audit page. Before shipment, inspect a random pull from each lot for size, weight, hole centering, cracks, mold spots, scent against the reference and finding materials. See quality control and testing and inspection.
Documents and compliance
Documents are part of the product. Agarwood lots need CITES export documentation per lot, because the whole Aquilaria genus is listed in Appendix II. Sandalwood needs origin stated per lot, since legal supply comes mainly from plantations in Australia or from legally sourced Indian wood. Silver or plated findings need a material declaration, and EU and US importers should verify nickel and heavy-metal rules for jewelry in the target market. The product must not carry health claims. These points are expanded on compliance and certifications.
Packaging and logistics
Beads are light, but they are sensitive to humidity. Sealed foil pouches or jars with desiccant, a rigid outer carton and a dry route are the basics. Samples and small lots usually go by express in 3 to 7 days; air freight runs 5 to 10 days; sea freight typically 15 to 25 days to the US West Coast and 30 to 45 days to Europe. Customs classification must be confirmed with your broker. Read the full picture at logistics and shipping.
Common mistakes
- Comparing quotes for different products: a bead rolled from powder and a scented wood bead are not like for like.
- Approving a sample too soon: a fresh bead smells rough until it has aged.
- Leaving packaging to the end, when it affects both humidity protection and freight volume.
- Skipping documents until the goods are packed, when agarwood paperwork can take longer than production.
When you are ready, send the brief through the quote form. The desk replies with a shortlist, a formula sheet and typical reference terms, with final terms confirmed in writing.
